António Botto: a construção de um ser gay masculino numa periferia cultural, por Anna Klobucka

António Botto:

The Making of a Gay Male Self on a Cultural Periphery

Na Cardiff University ,
66a Park Place, Cardiff, CF10 3AS
16/03/2015, 17:30 - 19:30

«Professor Anna Klobucka (University of Massachusetts Dartmouth) presents a talk on António Botto.

The life and literary career of Portuguese poet António Botto (1897-1959) remain largely unknown outside of Portugal despite his unique status as the author of candid and joyfully unapologetic homoerotic poetry, which was published on the open market in progressively expanded editions of his Canções (Songs) from the early 1920s through the 1950s. Born into a poor working-class family and lacking any formal educational background, Botto was also for that reason an unlikely candidate for admission to Portugal’s literary elite, which he nonetheless joined due in good measure to the efforts of his close friend and champion Fernando Pessoa.

Professor Klobucka’s work on Botto draws both on his published writings and on the vast trove of his late manuscripts held by the National Library in Lisbon with the aim to chronicle and explore the writer’s elaborate, lifelong enterprise of self-fashioning and performance of identity that in some respects parallels but also significantly departs from the examples provided by his better-known contemporaries such as André Gide and Federico García Lorca.

Wine reception and refreshments to follow.»
